In 2011–2012, Iowa forward Aaron White enjoyed a fine freshman season, earning Big Ten All-Freshman Team and All-Conference Honorable Mention honors. On Sunday, White made a strong case for All-Conference Shoe-Throwing consideration as well.
With the Hawkeyes leading Northwestern, 51–37, Wildcats guard Alex Marcotullio lost his right shoe during an Iowa offensive possession. White tossed it off the court and out of the way, only to come this close to pegging his coach, Fran McCaffery, in the head with it.
The shoe ended up flying into the stands, much to the surprise of the fans sitting behind the Iowa bench. And the possession resulted in a made 3-pointer by White’s teammate, Josh Oglesby.
Perhaps the Hawkeyes can regularly work this play into their offensive repertoire. They can call it the “Random Task Play,” in honor of the memorable “Honestly, who throws a shoe?” scene from the first Austin Powers movie. (H/T Brent Yarina)
