Gundy Makes Amends for Famous Rant

Mike Gundy’s famous “I’m a man! I’m 40!” rant was a turning point for Oklahoma State football. The Cowboys have a 46–15 record since that Sept. 22, 2007, postgame press conference, and Gundy says the viral video has had a positive effect on recruiting.

Yet it wasn’t until a few months ago that Gundy cleared the air with the player he was trying to defend, QB Bobby Reid. Coach and former player met at Reid’s request in Stillwater.

“I wanted him to know (my reasons for the event),” Gundy told Jimmie Tramel of the Tulsa World. “I thought he knew.”

“I would never change what I did for Bobby Reid, but I would change how I did it.”

Reid transferred to Texas Southern following the ’07 season. He had stated in an April 2008 story for ESPN The Magazine that the rant “basically ended my life” as he thought Gundy was faking it in light of Reid being benched.

Tramel’s story has Gundy on record saying that Reid has a good job in Houston and expressed an interest in coaching. Wouldn’t it be something if Reid found himself back in Stillwater one day? Bobby Reid profile
