Gray Ole Miss Football Uniforms Racist?

Count sports columnist and radio host Bomani Jones as someone who’s not a fan of Ole Miss’ alternate gray uniforms.

In a tweet on Saturday night, Jones expressed his opinion on what he thought the color choice for the uniform, coupled with Ole Miss’ nickname, represented:

It’s true that the Confederacy fought the Civil War in gray uniforms. But a Reddit thread on Jones’ tweet revealed a lot of people who thought Jones was just trying to stir the pot.

Ole Miss has done a lot to distance itself from the overtly Southern identity everyone has pigeonholed them for. It retired its Colonel Reb mascot in 2010. It dissociated itself from the Confederate flag. And as several Redditors pointed out, it’s far from the only school with alternate gray uniforms.

    my feelings are Mr Jones might want to express hidden anger on prodomitly white team in grey threads not prodomitly black.
    I’m sure their proud mothers and fathers might have a difference of opinion.

    Brantley…..so quick to dismiss any racial commet as the “race card” as you call it.

    It’s funny that if someone brought a flag with a swastika to a football game they would be thrown out. But if that same person brought a confederate flag to a game, or displayed it at their home or on their car, it would NOT be frowned upon.

    Remember, the Holocaust was only 4 yrs….slavery was 400…..do the math you “neck”.

    I thank you for the most intelligent post on this! Racism still exists because of a simple lack of education. I am a white southern man, great grandson of a confederate soldier, and have a proud family heritage of never owning slaves. It was a long enough time ago for biggots to still be riding on. Respect yourself, educate yourself and as The Lord has taught us, love everyone, hate the sin.
