Lost amid the hubbub surrounding South Carolina’s ninth-ranked football team was the Sunday home opener for the Gamecocks men’s basketball team. Perhaps anticipating this, Frank Martin decided to entice students to attend his first game as the head coach with a hard-to-refuse offer.
“We need you to create the best home environment in the country,” Martin said in a promotional video. “For this first game, it’s on me. All students attending our game will receive free food.”
Reportedly, “free food” meant a hot dog and fries, which you’ll take in a heartbeat if you’re a college student short on cash. As an added bonus, the Gamecocks overcame a 17-point deficit in the second half to defeat visiting Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 82–75.
