Former Duke Captain Dies of Heart Attack

For the second time in less than six months, Duke basketball is mourning the loss of a former captain of a Final Four team.

Phil Henderson — who led the Blue Devils to the 1990 national championship game — reportedly died on Sunday of cardiac arrest at his home in the Philippines, where he was working as the director of the Filipino Basketball Academy. He was 44.

Former Duke star Art Heyman, the captain of the program’s first-ever Final Four team in 1963, passed away last August.

“On behalf of the entire Duke Basketball family, we are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Phil Henderson,” said head coach Mike Krzyzewski on Monday. “Phil was a talented player and a good man with a gentle soul. We will miss him dearly.”

Henderson finished his collegiate career with 1,397 points and 330 rebounds. A second round draft pick of the Dallas Mavericks in 1990, Henderson played internationally as a pro. Phil Henderson profile

What’s sad is I watched him play all those years on tv, but now forget him. Time is evil sometimes!

I also watched him play. What a sad day for his family, duke university and the duke basketball program. He will be missed. God bless him and his family.

I had a chance to play a little pickup ball with him while in high school…before he left for Duke…what a class act and all-around good guy.

Sadly, I was unaware of Phil Henderson’s passing until just now. I remember him from his Duke days. He was a quiet but steady influence for the Blue Devils. May God bless his family. RIP, Phil.

it’s strange a professional athlete die from a heart attack u’d expect their hearts to be in good health

Why BS – how do you know he didn’t play with Phil? I’m just (or was) an ordinary gym rat, but got to play with David Thompson in Charlotte after his NBA days when he used to come to the Y. He was only in his 30′s, and could still dunk with a vengeance even after the injuries. Best player I ever played with or against, by far – and had the best basketball day of my life in one winner-stays-up half-court run on the same team with him.
