FAU Naming FB Stadium After Prison Co.

Ironically, Florida Atlantic has sold the naming rights of its cushy, less-than-two-years-old football stadium to a company that makes its bones on something that’s the polar opposite of comfort.

On Tuesday, FAU is expected to finalize a $5 million naming rights deal with GEO Group, which advertises itself on its website as “the world’s leading provider of correctional, detention, and community reentry services with 101 facilities, approximately 73,000 beds, and 18,000 employees around the globe.”

In other words, FAU Stadium will be named after a prison company.

From a local business perspective, the deal makes sense. GEO Group is located across I-95 from FAU’s campus in Boca Raton and boasts an FAU alum in George Zoley as its CEO. Still, naming a stadium after a prison company seems … strange.

Our proposed nickname for the soon-to-be GEO Group Stadium: “The Owl Pen” (rim shot).
