Former New Mexico State standout Troy Gillenwater is in his first season with Spartak Primorie Vladivostok in Russia, far from the hoops spotlight. Yet a blooper of his from a recent game is spreading around the internet like wildfire.
With the ball at the top of the 3-point arc, Gillenwater — a First Team All-WAC performer during the 2010–2011 season — mistakenly passed it to his coach, Gundars Vetra, standing on the sideline. Without missing a beat, Gundars passed it to Aleksei Golyahkov , who sank a 3-pointer (which obviously didn’t count) and raised his arms in mock celebration, much to the amusement of the crowd.
The clip is well worth watching in slow-motion, as Gillenwater’s reaction upon realizing his mistake is classic. In light of Gillenwater’s strong performance with Spartak Primorie thus far — he is averaging 16.7 PPG on 54.7% FG through six games — he’ll be forgiven for this goof, which has nearly 500,000 views (as of 2:00 PM ET Tuesday) since being posted to YouTube on Monday.
