ESPN Reporter Elbows ‘Cuse Crowd in 1985

In the rough-and-tumble early days of Big East Conference basketball, it wasn’t just on the hardwood where things got physical.

Following Syracuse’s come-from-behind, 64–63 win over rival Georgetown in front of a Carrier Dome crowd of more than 32,000 in January 1985, ESPN’s Tom Mees was attempting to report on the postgame scene. When the glut of surrounding fans refused to give him enough room to do his job, Mees made like a power forward who had just snatched a rebound and threw a nasty elbow at an SU reveler who had cut in front of the camera.

A memo to the CBS crew covering Saturday’s Georgetown-Syracuse game: If the crowd pushes you at any time, do as Mees did and just push back.
