Bobby Knight has had issues with Kentucky basketball in the past. He referred to acknowledge them as anything but that “team from the SEC” during the Wildcats’ march to the 2012 NCAA title and has cited coach John Calipari as not being a good influence in college basketball.
To prevent further such agitation, Knight’s employers at ESPN that now have him covering Southeastern Conference games have wisely chosen to reassign him during any SEC games that take place at Kentucky’s Rupp Arena.
Knight will serve as color commentator alongside play-by-play announcer Rece Davis for ESPN’s coverage of SEC basketball. Indiana fans who still worship the chair-throwing icon must be very pleased to hear that he hasn’t abandoned his enmity toward Kentucky hoops.
While very unconventional, this is a smart move on ESPN’s part to avoid an ugly incident from taking place at Rupp Arena.
