Surely when Michelle Picon and five of her Duke graduate student friends attended the Blue Devils’ game at Miami (FL) last Wednesday, they did so knowing that they would be harassed by Hurricanes students and fans.
Nonetheless, Picon was outraged enough at how she and her friends were treated that she aired her grievances in a pompous-as-all-hell guest column in Duke’s student newspaper, The Chronicle.
“About 1,300 students were in attendance, and I’m sure 1,200 of them had never watched a Miami basketball game in their entire undergraduate careers,” Picon wrote. “Uninspired expletives, homophobic slurs and limp references to genitalia were the only ‘cheers’ I heard from Miami students the entire game.
“During the game, the majority of the students standing near us would physically turn their backs on their own team in order to comment on the size of our penises. Meanwhile, Miami played the game of their lives unobserved. I leave it up to you to infer what these students are really passionate about.”
We’d like to thank all the commenters on the original Chronicle article for putting Picon in her place for this incredibly whiny piece of “journalism.”
