Dabo Swinney Goes HAM on Spurrier

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has always had a gift for getting under the skin of opposing coaches (see: Fulmer, Phil), and did he ever ruffle the feathers of Clemson’s Dabo Swinney.

You see, after South Carolina beat Clemson for the third consecutive year for the first time in over four decades, the Ol’ Ball Coach got awful cocky by saying, “I guess around here historically they pretty much owned us, but they don’t own us now, that’s for sure.”

Oh yeah, it was also alleged he had this to say: “We ain’t LSU or Alabama but we ain’t Clemson either.” (Although that has since been attributed to South Carolina play-by-play man Todd Ellis.)

That didn’t sit well with Swinney. One of the nicest coaches in the country according to many, Swinney fired back with double barrels on Thursday:

“If he said that, I am disappointed because I was taught to win or lose with class. That is kind of a childish thing to put out there, to be honest with you. I think our program here speaks for itself. I guess I would have to say I agree with him. He is right. They aren’t Clemson and they aren’t ever going to be Clemson, to be honest with you.

“No three-game winning streak is going to change that. It’s not the first three-game winning streak and it might not be the last. It might be 50 more years before it happens again. But I have gone out of my way to be complimentary to them and to coach Spurrier but I will defend my program, my players and my coaches. I am going to defend Clemson University because I believe in it. I think he is exactly right – they are not Clemson and never will be. You are looking at the best era in South Carolina football right now. They just had their second 10-win season, they won a championship in 1969 and the 2010 SEC East. And this rivalry – this is a lot more about domination rather than a rivalry and that’s a fact. My kids and grandkids probably won’t live long enough to see this become a rivalry.”

“I have respect for their program, but South Carolina is not Clemson. There are a lot of differences. This is a place that has won a national title, 17 conference championships and now two division titles. Heck, we have won more bowl games than they have even been to. We have 100 plus more wins than South Carolina. That is reality. This is the best era in 115 years and they have done a great job.

“Coach Spurrier has been there for seven years, but after five years he only had 35 wins and got a new contract and all that kind of stuff. After five years at Clemson, if I have only 35 wins they will be looking for a new coach and they should be. There is a different standard here. He is actually right – they ain’t Alabama, they ain’t LSU and they certainly are not Clemson. That is why Carolina is in Chapel Hill, USC is in California and the University of South Carolina always has been and always will be in Clemson. You can print that. Tweet that.”

Don’t worry coach, we will.

It was Todd Ellis that said “We aint Clemson”.
    Get your story straight Dabo.
Spurrier did say that Clemson doesn’t ‘own us’ anymore.

Clemson is just sour that Carolina has finally passed them as a program.

Swinney is a low class, immature child. The only thing more idiotic than his comments is that he has lasted this long as an [inherited] head coach.

  • DB

What a loser…this man is delusional if he thinks winning a couple of football games against in a class b basketball conference schedule will ever amount to the tradition that the SEC has. Count the championships in baseball, basketball and football the SEC has versus any other in the nation and it will clearly show this man has been sniffing the manure and trying to save his job after the pitiful coaching job he has done over the last four games.

    • TopDawgs

Why do you bring the conference into this? I think it’s so funny that SC fans always say how great their conference is, but they are the doormat along with Vandy. Winning the East when GA, Fla, and TN are having a down year means nothing. Remember, they did nothing with that win as they got blasted in the Championship game and then in their bowl game against an ACC TEAM. HAHAHA.

  • Rude

Ridiculous to be asked the question and ridiculous to respond.

  • Impressed

Regardless of the fact that Coach Spurrier didn’t say what was attributed to him, I am impressed with the pride that Dabo Swinney showed for Clemson’s football program. It’s the kind of pride that should be shared by the players and that would ignite a fire in their guts to play with more courage and passion. I haven’t seen that very often this year, even when they were winning their first 8 games. Sometimes you just have to get fighting mad and then channel that anger into an intense focus on doing your job on the field no matter what obstacles you face. They already have the talent, so when the Clemson players start showing the kind of pride their coach has for their team, they will be something very special!

The same kind of pride that beats women with metal rods, chokes them, and pushes them down the stairs. Gotta love Clemson’s football team. No wonder they’re all thugs. They have an immature coach who can’t control himself from looking like a five year old, how do they expect him to control 85 college athletes?

    • j is stupid

How many coaches and players has SC had arrested?

  • Embarrassed CU Fan

Anybody that has listened to Spurrier knows he has always said positive things about CU and Dabo. Seems to me that after losing 3 of the last 4 and with a definite possibility of losing to VaTech on Saturday, Dabo has more important things to be worrying about. With a loss in the ACC (Almost Can Compete) Championship game, and a loss in the rematch with Auburn in the Chick-fil-A Bowl they will have lost 5 of last six with the only win being over Wake Forest on the last play of the game. Don’t really see a big difference in Dabo and Tommy.
Finally, Dabo said something about winning and losing with class? Gatorade showers after a comeback win over MD (2-10) and a red faced rant after beating an Auburn team that finished 3rd in the SEC West and finally ranting about some comments that Spurrier did not even make: Now that id CLASS!!

South Carolina 34…Clemson 13…There is NOTHING else to be said.

  • Big Cock

Hey Dabo. There’s always next year.

  • Go Cocks!

Clemson University if full of rednecks! Dabo just happens to by one of them. Thats why he has such an ignorant response. Dumb idiot!

    • #1 fan

      I totally agree!
