Basketball at Division II Bellarmine University in Louisville may be significantly underexposed compared to either Kentucky or the University of Louisville. But last Thursday, the Knights’ Division II game against Quincy provided a moment that’s arguably more incredible than anything the Wildcats or Cardinals have done so far this season.
Student Casey Saulman was the participant in a halftime promotion where he would win a Carribean cruise for two if he hit made a layup, free throw, 3-pointer and halfcourt shot in 30 seconds. Improbably, Saulman pulled it off, with his halfcourt shot hitting nothing but net.
“I just looked over to the sideline and people were saying I won,” Saulman told WAVE-TV the day after. “I just thought of the Caribbean trip and started running and screaming and heard all the fans and it was crazy!”
A funny twist on this story is that Saulman’s roommate, Garrett Ross, is a guard on the Bellarmine team. Which has got to be tough. If at any point Ross screws up during the season, you can be sure that Knights coach Scott Davenport will joke, “I bet your roommate could do better than that!”
