Crean Instructed IU’s Sheehey to Flop?

With Indiana down five at Minnesota with 27.3 seconds left on Tuesday, Hoosiers coach Tom Crean was desperate – perhaps desperate enough that he instructed his players to flop if and when a Gophers player extended an elbow, in the hopes that the officials would call an offensive or flagrant foul.

As one can see from the first video below, Will Sheehey’s reaction to Andre Hollins’ “elbow” was akin to the type of dive that Gordon Bombay asked Charlie Conway to fake in The Mighty Ducks.

Looking for a smoking gun in the argument that Sheehey’s acting job came on orders from Crean? Take a look at the second video below, where Crean appears to be instructing his players to watch for elbows from Minnesota. After reviewing the play at the monitors, it became apparent to officials that Sheehey flopped and Minnesota went on to win, 77-73.

Whether Sheehey acted alone or was told to flop from his coach, it was bad form from the No. 1 Hoosiers.

    1) Every team has a player or players that utilize the flop at least once in a game even if it isn’t a close game.
    2) There are numerous offseason camps that specialize in certain aspects of the game only and learning how to flop effectively is one of main things these kind of camps teach.
    3) I’m not saying that there is no way that Crean was telling them to employ the flop but being able to positively say that that was what he was doing, without the benefit of any audio at that, is a stretch to say the least.
    4) Coach K has a PhD in teaching the flop.
