Realignment Talk

We conclude our most recent class reunion series with Part II of the whereabouts of the 1990 Loyola Marymount team. It features the player who became the face of the Lions’ Cinderella run, Bo Kimble, and the man who constructed the mad-dash system that made the team so much fun to watch, coach Paul Westhead.

Part I

Bo Kimble
Kimble grew up in Philadelphia and went to the same high school as Hank Gathers. During Loyola Marymount’s historic run, Kimble took the first free throw of each game left-handed to honor Gathers. He made all four. The image of him taking free throws left-handed has become an indelible NCAA Tournament image. He is now on the Forty-Four for Life Foundation’s board of directors, raising awareness of heart disease in Gathers’ honor. Kimble resides in Philly.

Christian Scott
Christian Scott was just a freshman on the 1989-90 team, but he will forever be included in NCAA montages as the player who lept from the bench, waving a towel after Bo Kimble made his first left-handed shot. Today Scott is a sporting goods company executive in Orange County.

Jeff Roscoe
Jeff Roscoe was the last man off the bench for Loyola Marymount. He appeared in 17 games and averaged 1.9 minutes a game, lowest on the team. Today he resides in Fife, WA, and works in sewer management.

Greg Walker
Early in LMU’s second round game against Michigan, the Wolverines’ Sean Higgins heard Walker and another player laughing. After he angrily asked what was funny, Walker responded, “You have no idea what’s coming, but we’re about to blow you guys out.” Today Walker is the director of student activities at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, CA.

Tony Walker
Tony Walker was the starting point guard on the 189-90 team and averaged 7.1 assists per game. According to former teammate Jeff Fryer, Walker is currently working with at-risk children, something he told the L.A. Times he wanted to do in a ’91 article.

Coaches

Paul Westhead
Jim Lynam, who had just come from the Clippers, was slated to be the next head coach at Loyola Marymount just before the 1985-86 season. But after three months on the job, Lynam bolted for the Philadelphia 76ers. Left without a coach and desperate, Loyola Marymount turned to Paul Westhead, who coached the Lakers and Bulls before settling in Southern California to teach English at Marymount. The rest is history.

He left after the season to coach the Nuggets, but it failed miserably. Today Westhead is the head coach of the Oregon’s women’s basketball team who finished 16-15 this season and will host a first round game in the Women’s NIT tonight against Eastern Washington.

Jay Hillock
Prior to his time with Loyola Marymount, Jay Hillock was the head coach at Gonzaga from 1981-1985. He took over for his Westhead after the 1989-90 season, but just lasted two years at the helm. In 2004 Hillock was hired by the Chicago Bulls to be their director of pro personnel, a position he still holds today.

Judas Prada
Judas Prada joined Westhead when he went back to the NBA, as an assistant with the Denver Nuggets. He also served under Jerry Tarkanian with the San Antonio Spurs. According to Fryer, Prada is an NBA scout with the Timberwolves.

Bruce Woods
Bruce Woods is the lone coach not currently working in basketball. He’s currently a salesman for Jostens Rings.
