#90-81: Quarterbacks To Determine Coaching Futures At Colorado And Maryland

Many of these coaches are either on their way up or on their way out. And whether a coach is on the hot seat or just a newbie, who he picks to start behind center could make or break the 2010 season for several of the following coaches in our next batch of teams for our 120 Countdown.

.

90. Maryland
2009 Record: 2-10
If Colorado’s Dan Hawkins is on the hot seat, Terps coach Ralph “Fridge” Friedgen is on the toilet seat. The tenth year coach, Friedgen needs junior quarterback Jamarr Robinson to put some points on the board. If they only muster up 21.3 points per game again this season, the Fridge will likely be done in College Park after at one point being hailed as the program’s savior.

.

89. Virginia
2009 record: 3-9
New head coach Mike London has the support of his staff, the fans, and the players before the season has even begun.  Coming in with a good reputation as a hot new coach from Richmond, the Cavaliers fan base is buzzing with excitement.  As London will learn, the energy only exists with W’s on the board.  If the Cavaliers get off to a slow start, the honeymoon will officially be over. With little talent leftover from the Al Groh Era and a brutal schedule in the ACC Coastal, UVA will be lucky to get two conference wins this year.

.

88. Marshall
2009 record: 7-6
What’s the name of Marshall’s game? Thumper! Weakside linebacker Mario Harvey a.k.a. “Thumper”, will need to surpass his totals of 117 tackles and seven sacks last season or Marshall’s green could turn blue. The “Thumper” better bring the ruckus, and fast, as the Thundering Herd opens its season at Ohio State, plays host to West Virginia, and then plays another five bowl teams. This team might have trouble convincing each other that they are indeed Marshall during that stretch. And Brian Anderson to Chuck Walker will not be reminding anyone of Chad Pennington to Randy Moss any time soon. On the bright side, RB Martin Ward could be a star in the making.

.

87. Louisiana Tech
2009 record: 4-8
The good news for first year coach Lenny Dykes? His team opens the season against Grambling State. The bad news for first year coach Lenny Dykes? He inherits a team that went 0-7 on the road last year. While the Bulldogs schedule ensures La. Tech won’t repeat last year’s mark (they only play five games on the road), they’ll have to win a couple games on the road to make a bowl game. If Dykes’ s Mike Leach-inspired offense clicks and a pair of his Tennessee transfers groove, this team could make a run in the WAC.

.

86. Louisville
2009 Record: 4-8
Cardinal fans need something to keep their minds off Rick Pitino’s extra-curricular activities. Senior quarterback Adam Froman – no relation to Abe or Afroman – hopes that man is him. While the sausage-king could help the Cardinals muster up more than one Big East win this year, fans will likely be looking forward to the Pitino and the hardwood unless new head coach Charlie Strong can work miracles with a defense that finished 84th in rushing last season.

.

85. Kent State
2009 record: 5-7
The defense returns seven starters and should be the team’s flashier half. The offense? Not so golden. The only time they scored over 30 points last season, they lost. The team must improve upon its 19.3 points per game average, or golden slumbers will fill their fans’ eyes. It looks to be another year of mediocrity for Kent State. This team will only go as far as RB Eugene Jarvis – now in his sixth season of eligibility – will take them.

.

84. Colorado
2009 Record: 3-9
This season will be the Buffaloes last season in the Big 12. The biggest question mark: will fifth-year coach Dan Hawkins be joining them in the Pac-12? He just picked Tyler Hansen over his own son Cody Hawkins to quarterback the team. The Buffs will be better than last year with almost everyone back, but this is the Big 12, brother! With road trips at Missouri, Oklahoma and Nebraska – not to mention a trip to Berkeley to face Cal – this will be the end of the road for Hawkins.

.

83. Duke
2009 record: 5-7
The Blue Devils won five games thanks to alumni Thaddeus Lewis’ right arm. Their running game ranked dead-last in the nation last year and while it can’t get worse, there’s not much reason to believe it will improve much. They may have three very talented receivers who caught over 50 balls last season, but it remains to be seen if anyone can get them the ball this year. Rest easy and have a few laughs when your football team faces Alabama, Dukies – Kyrie Irving, Seth Curry, and the basketball season are around the corner.

.

82. Minnesota
2009 Record: 6-7
After a stellar freshman year, Adam Weber hasn’t reminded anyone of Brett Favre. Minnesota fans also have to endure watching a team that only has two returning starters for a defense that was the team’s strength a year ago. The Gophers need to rush for more than 100 yards a game this season, or its cute, furry mascot may go after Bill Murray. Expect another season in the Big Ten cellar for the Gophers.

.

81. East Carolina
2009 Record: 9-5
The last couple seasons at East Carolina made fans want to raise up and swing it around like a helicopter. This won’t be one of those teams. They will miss ex-coach Skip Holtz and quarterback Patrick Pinkney, the quarterback who led them to back to back C-USA titles. Former Texas Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill seemed to be the only guy willing to take the job and the Red Raiders weren’t exactly known for defense. Did we mention the Pirates only return two starters on that side of the ball?
