Calipari Calls UK Players ‘Uncoachable’

Early departures to the NBA be damned, John Calipari had high expectations for a Kentucky team trying to defend its 2012 national title. At a disappointing 17–8, those expectations aren’t being met — and Coach Cal is holding his players responsible.

During Saturday’s ugly 88–58 blowout loss at Tennessee, reporters covering the game overheard Calipari yelling “I can’t coach you!” to freshman guard Archie Goodwin as he headed to the bench. During a timeout late in the game, Coach Cal didn’t even speak to his players in the huddle. His rationale? “I’m not wasting my breath here,” he said afterwards. “(They’re) not listening.”

“We have a couple of guys who aren’t real coachable,” he also said. “You tell them what to do and they do their own thing.”

Will this light a fire under the Wildcats in time for March? Or will it merely be a sad analogy for what’s looking like a lost season in Lexington?

With the wealth of blue-chip recruits waiting in the wings, I have a strong feeling that Coach Cal will be doing some weeding out of the dead weight from this year’s team come off-season. While no one in their right mind could expect them to repeat as champs with all that they lost, it should have been better than this. And it’s real obvious that he does have some uncoachable guys on the squad — as evidenced by the way they play. For whomever he decides to keep, they need to quit thinking about the NBA and start thinking about the team they’re on now, and how to contribute. NONE of these guys are ready to be pros!
