Running back James Potts’ first season to shine at the University of Buffalo may be over in ignominious fashion.
Potts ran for a 49-yard touchdown on just his second collegiate carry on Saturday night against Morgan State. But while celebrating his score, his right cleat caught the turf and sent him to the ground. The resulting injury will keep him out this week and potentially beyond.
Potts redshirted in 2010 and sat out 2011 with academic issues.
“Unfortunately it doesn’t look good at this point,” coach Jeff Quinn said on Monday. “It’s really disappointing just because of how hard he’s worked [on and off the field].”
While we feel for Potts, we can’t help but recall former NFL placekicker Bill Gramatica’s embarrassing celebration injury 11 years ago.
