Badgers’ Ball Going by ‘Mon-TEE’ Again

Comments

Wisconsin running back Montee Ball must fancy himself in the same vein as Sean Combs. At least when it comes to constantly changing what he likes to be called.

The preseason Heisman Trophy candidate informed the college football world in July that his first name should be pronounced “Mon-TAY” instead of the “Mon-TEE” that he had gone by during the 2011 season. But now Ball is back to being “Mon-TEE.”

“The coaches have been calling me Mon-TEE now,” Ball said in an interview with reporter Jesse Temple. “They say, ‘Mon-TAY is done with. We don’t want to see him anymore and it’s back to Mon-TEE.’ I’m just going with it now.”

Days after informing people of his name’s then-proper pronunciation, Ball was assaulted by five men in Madison, WI. He then got off to a painfully slow start to the season that had people questioning whether they would ever see the record-breaking runner from 2011 again.

That form has returned in the past three games, each of which saw him average over six yards per carry, rushed for over 100 yards and scored two or more touchdowns.

Is Ball’s reemergence a result of the change in pronunciation? Temple put it best: “Mon-TAY or Mon-TEE? By any name, Ball is back.”
