Warren Sapp Blasts Al Golden, Miami (FL) Staff

Comments

Miami (FL) head coach Al Golden has increased the Hurricanes’ win total each of his first three years in Coral Gables. However, don’t count former Miami star DT Warren Sapp among those who are impressed.

“Don’t talk to me about Al Golden and whatever that D-coordinator’s name is,” Sapp said on the “Kup & Crowder Show” on WQAM Miami last week. “Let me tell you what I’ve learned in the 19 years of being around the NFL … don’t hire someone you can’t fire. That’s the golden rule. The D-coordinator is killing my school. That looks like no Miami defense in the history of our school; even when Schnellenberger was getting it started!”

“That D-coordinator” is Mark D’Onofrio, whose unit finished a disappointing 10th in the ACC in total defense each of the last two seasons. In 2012, the Hurricanes defense surrendered a school-record 5,837 yards, so Sapp’s criticism is well warranted.

Additionally, Sapp took exception to Golden reportedly interviewing for the head coaching position at Penn State (his alma mater) following the 2013 season.

“Go home,” Sapp said of that report. “You don’t need to interview at home if you know what home is. Go home.”

Ouch.
