Bill Walton Makes Awkward On-Air Jokes

Bill Walton was in very rare form even for him while providing color commentary for the Pac-12 tournament on Thursday night.

When the action cut back to Walton and play-by-play partner Dave Pasch following a video clip of mascots and cheerleaders piling out of a limousine, the Deadhead Redhead commented that he “was way in the back with Ray Lewis.”

Lewis — who was hired earlier this week by ESPN as a contributing NFL analyst — plead guilty to obstruction of justice in the January 2000 stabbing deaths of two men in Atlanta, and the blood of one of the victims was later found in Lewis’ limo.

Because one awkward comment about a colleague wasn’t enough, Walton also joked later in the broadcast about Bill Simmons’ recent Twitter suspension. “If they’re going to suspend Bill Simmons, anything is possible,” he said without provocation.

On both occasions, Pasch hurriedly tried to move the action along. Both times, it was too little too late, as Walton basically dared The Worldwide Leader to suspend him as well.
