Vols’ Dog Mascot Tries Biting UK Kicker
At least one member of the Tennessee football family showed that they still have some bite (literally) in them at the end of a disappointing 5–7 season.
Smokey, the Vols’ live Bluetick Coonhound mascot, got loose shortly before the second half during Saturday’s home game against Kentucky. As Tennessee made its way back onto the field, Smokey shook his handlers and charged right at Kentucky placekicker Craig McIntosh. The hound nipped at McIntosh but didn’t actually bite him.
Perhaps the Vols were inspired by their mascot’s aggression toward the competition. In their first game since head coach Derek Dooley was fired, they outscored the Wildcats 17–3 in the second half en route to a 37–17 win, their first victory in SEC play this season.
