Vanderbilt Football: School Retires No. 1 Jersey for Sick Fan

New Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason has endeared himself to the Commodore faithful before even taking the field.

Mason made a personal trip to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital on Wednesday to visit six-year-old Commodores fan Michael Sloan, who is fighting for his life after being found at the bottom of a pool last Friday. Mason gave the Sloan family a No. 1 Vanderbilt jersey and delivered the news that the program is retiring the number for the 2014 season in support of Michael, the team’s “No. 1 fan.”

While the number will be retired for only one season, it is quite a gesture from Mason and the program. Let’s all hope for a swift recovery.
