UTEP Hoops Gets 1980s Retro Uniforms

UTEP men’s basketball could have gone for a cheesy slogan along the lines of “Mining for Success” to hype themselves up for the 2012–2013. What they went for instead — and the uniforms they designed to signify it — is so much cooler.

The Miners’ season is all about “Bringin’ Back the 80’s.” It was during that decade that UTEP, led by legendary coach Don Haskins, enjoyed its most prolonged period of success, going 227–82 (.735 winning percentage) and sending stars Tim Hardaway and Antonio Davis on to the NBA.

The adidas-designed threads are delightfully retro, with an old-school stripe pattern running along the neck and under the armpits. And all three of the color combinations — orange numbers/letters on blue jersey, white on orange and orange on white — work really well.

If the Miners play as well as they look, they will definitely find themselves back in the Big Dance after a one-year absence. Grade: A
