UNC’s Davis Auctioning ’76 Gold Medal

Have you always wanted an Olympic gold medal but don’t have an ounce of athleticism? Here’s your chance to get one.

Former Tar Heel standout Walter Davis is auctioning the 1976 Olympic gold medal he won while playing under his college coach, Dean Smith, and alongside Scott May, Adrian Dantley and North Carolina teammate Phil Ford.

Davis’ medal is part of an annual Hall of Fame” basketball collection offered by Grey Flannel Auctions. At 11:30 AM ET on Thursday, with two weeks remaining, the bidding price was at $12,000.

As of one year ago, Davis was enjoying a busy retirement in Denver that included running a cigar store, giving private basketball lessons and working as a Nuggets community ambassador.

After leaving UNC in 1977, Davis was a six-time NBA All-Star during a 16-year career spent with five teams. His career was sullied in 1987 when, as a member of the Phoenix Suns, he testified on illegal drug use by his teammates in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Davis and the Suns have since repaired their relationship.

Davis is also the uncle of former UNC and NBA player Hubert Davis. Walter Davis profile
