Spurrier-Swinney War of Words Resumes
For Steve Spurrier, even the gruesome injury to South Carolina star running back Marcus Lattimore on Saturday was a chance to give a back-handed compliment to foe and Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney in their ongoing war of words.
When asked about Lattimore’s injury, Swinney said, “I was watching it and it just breaks my heart. I mean I just hurt for him and his family and his teammates. This is a guy that to me represents all the good things that college football should be about.”
At a Monday rally to support Lattimore, Spurrier said the following to the crowd gathered.
“A lot of quotes came across from the nation and I read one today from the head coach at our upstate school. You know, that school that used to beat us a lot that doesn’t beat us much anymore, that one. Usually when that coach up there talks about South Carolina it’s a bunch of garbage and a bunch of BS usually. But I have to agree with him on what he said the other day. He said, ‘Marcus Lattimore stands for what’s right about college football.’”
Swinney responded to Spurrier’s barb on his weekly call-in radio show. “I don’t really have a comment other than I’m embarrassed for him,” he said.
We’re in agreement with Swinney here. Spurrier using an injury to his star player — one that the entire college football world found heartbreaking — to say something petty about his Clemson counterpart just seems selfish.
