SoCal H.S. Recruit Shatters Backboard

It’s not often that basketball recruits to the Big Sky Conference draw a lot of notice. But Ako Kaluna, who signed a letter of intent with Northern Arizona in November, has made it impossible to ignore him.

Last Thursday, the 6-foot-7, 260-pounder shattered a backboard in a game for West Ranch (CA) High School against Bishop Alemany. Kaluna’s feat of strength forced the game to be delayed for an hour and moved to another gym.

Scarily, this is not the first time Kaluna has done this. As a junior, he broke a rim at West Ranch last year, forcing the school to order additional rims for future emergencies.

Northern Arizona isn’t just recruiting Kaluna on account of these “antics.” He’s averaging 19.3 points and 14.7 rebounds per game this season and is the favorite to take home Santa Clarita Valley MVP honors.

Needless to say, this clip will be included in his senior season highlight reel.
