SNL, Melissa McCarthy Spoof Rutgers CBB

Comments

The absurdity of the Mike Rice situation at Rutgers was tailor-made to be spoofed on “Saturday Night Live.” And boy, did the show luck out in having Melissa McCarthy as its host the same week that Rice was fired.

McCarthy portrayed Sheila Kelly, the tyrannical coach of the women’s team at fictional Middle Delaware State. In addition to chucking basketballs at players and berating them a la Mike Rice, she was also videotaped throwing bricks and toasters at them, threatening them with a baseball bat and chasing them down with a golf cart she drove into practice.

Also worth praising in the skit is Bill Hader, who has the cadence and pacing of an “Outside the Lines” reporter down pat.
