Rutgers Bball Coach Sent to Anger Mgmt
A fiery demeanor is a hallmark of many successful basketball coaches. It could, however, prove to be the downfall of Rutgers’ Mike Rice.
On Thursday, the school suspended Rice for three games and fined him $50,000 for “inappropriate language and behavior” directed at players during practices, including throwing basketballs at players’ heads. Rice will have to undergo anger management counseling and, for the rest of the season, be observed by a monitor who will chronicle his behavior in practice.
Rice was already on the hot seat before his anger issues surfaced, as he has guided the Scarlet Knights to a disappointing 36–37 record in two-plus seasons with the team. If he fails to improve his behavior and improve the team’s fortunes the rest of this season, Rice could soon find himself out of a job.
