Ricky Watters Hired as Florida H.S. Coach

Twelve years after he hung up his cleats, former Notre Dame and five-time Pro Bowl RB Ricky Watters is stepping back on a football field.

On Friday, Oak Ridge High School in Orlando hired the 44-year-old Watters to be its next head coach. Watters replaces another former collegiate football player, Florida’s Elijah Williams, who took an assistant coaching job at Florida A&M.

A key cog on Lou Holtz’s powerhouse Irish teams in the 1980s, Watters made a bigger name for himself as a pro. He remains one of only two running backs to rush for 1,000 yards in a season for three different teams and was a starter on the 49ers’ Super Bowl XXIX-winning squad.

Can Watters find similar success in his first coaching gig of any kind? Find out this fall. Ricky Watters profile
