QB Carmazzi With Smartmed Technologies
Of the six quarterbacks selected before former Michigan standout and future Pro Football Hall of Famer Tom Brady, only one of them declined to be interviewed for “The Brady 6,” an ESPN documentary on the group that aired in April 2011: Giovanni Carmazzi.
A third-round pick by the 49ers — Brady’s favorite team growing up — out of Hofstra, Carmazzi’s two-year NFL career was spent entirely on the practice squad. After one-year stints with the Rhein Fire (2001), BC Lions (2004) and Calgary Stampeders (2005), Carmazzi was out of football and moved back near his hometown of Sacramento, CA.
As “The Brady 6” was happy to point out, Carmazzi really fell off the map, becoming a “yoga-exercising farmer” who doesn’t own a TV but “has five goats.”
Carmazzi is also the president of Smartmed Technologies, a company that his Hofstra biography says develops online software programs for physicians.
With Hofstra’s football program having folded in 2009, Carmazzi will likely be the school record-holder for completions (764), passing yards (9,371) and touchdown passes (71) for a very long time. He was a Division I-AA All-American in each of his three years as a starter (1997–1999) as well as a Walter Payton Award finalist as a senior.
