Protesters Decry New FAU Stadium Name
Some members of the Florida Atlantic University community are not happy over the school’s decision to sell the naming rights of its football stadium to a prison company, the GEO Group.
It’s not the name change itself that bothers the protesters but rather the decision to partner with a company accused of abuse in the past. An article by NPR in 2011 made note of on an investigation into the GEO group for keeping juvenile inmates in “barbaric and unconstitutional conditions.”
“The issue isn’t about what the stadium is named,” said protester Anole Halper. “It’s about the human rights abuses inherent in the prison system and what the university is supporting by engaging in a financial transaction with this company.”
What both FAU and the GEO Group will do to appease the protesters remains to be seen.
