Spartans Sporting New Helmets vs. UM?

Comments

[Update: Michigan State ended up wearing these helmets vs. Michigan but lost the game, 12-10. At least they looked good doing it.]

Michigan State football is normally pretty comfortable with its traditional green-and-white helmets. Except when the Spartans do battle with Wolverines. Then they need something special.

At least it appears that way. After wearing onetime, Nike Pro Combat lids (bottom right) during a 28–14 home win over its intrastate rival in 2011, Michigan State could be unveiling another custom helmet before the latest battle for the Paul Bunyan-Governor of Michigan Trophy.

A picture circulating around the internet shows a chrome MSU helmet with a design similar to the liquid metal lids worn by Oregon this season (bottom left). Even the subtle Spartan logo is similar to the duck wings on Oregon’s helmets.

If this is in fact what the Spartans will take the field at the Big House with on Saturday, athletic director Mark Hollis isn’t giving anything away.

“I saw the ones in Arbor that they taped,” he said in reference to the fake Spartan helmets that Michigan scout teamers wore this week. “I’m not going to comment on any helmets.”

For now, we will (if these are legit): Very sharp, Michigan State.
