Urban Meyer Prohibits the Word ‘Michigan’

There’s never talk around the Ohio State football program of its rivalry with Michigan. That’s because Urban Meyer won’t let anyone on his team — players or coaches — utter the word “Michigan.”

Sure enough, during his Thursday morning interview on “The Dan Patrick Show,” Meyer referred to Michigan over and over again as “our rivals.”

“It’s just something I learned from Coach [Woody] Hayes many, many years ago when I was first here in 1986,” Meyer said. “It’s a rule that we have around here that you pop down and do 10 pushups if you say it.”

Hayes famously referred to Michigan as “that team up north” during his tenure in Columbus — a tradition that Meyer revived almost the moment he arrived at Ohio State in 2012. Meyer’s tactics are stubborn and a little childish, but after the Buckeyes’ 12–0 season and their impressive haul on National Signing Day, we can’t argue with its effectiveness.
