One-Handed H.S. Hoopster Wows in GA

High school junior Zach Hodskins was born without any part of his left arm below the elbow, but that hasn’t stopped him from playing basketball. In fact, Hodskins is excelling on the court, both for Milton High School in Alpharetta, GA — the reigning state champion — and on the AAU circuit.

And not excelling “for a guy with one hand.” The video below shows Hodskins’ ability to blow by defenders and make shots from distance, abilities that any player would be happy to have.

“Watching him play would be amazing anyway because he’s that good,” said Milton coach Van Keys in a feature on Hodskins for USA Today. “But when you consider what he’s overcome to be so good, it’s almost surreal.”

Hodskins is averaging 11.3 PPG on the season, including a 21-point outburst against Christ (NC) School in which he hit seven three-pointers. He’s also held his own in AAU play with the Tennessee Playmakers and has received interest from Alabama-Birmingham.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Hodskins gets to continue his inspirational story in two years’ time on the Division I level, following in the footsteps of Manhattan’s Kevin Laue.
