Oklahoma Football: Sooners Get New Alternate Uniforms

Oklahoma is a proud historical program that has mostly steered clear of alternate uniforms - only to allow Nike to design bizarre wood-themed alternates for the 2014 season.

Nike explained its “Bring the Wood” mantra for these uniforms in typical Swoosh fashion:

“Never previously utilized on a football helmet, this touch of timber provides a very tangible link to the weathered texture of the Sooner Schooner, a Conestoga reminiscent of the pioneer mode of travel employed by the hearty souls who settled Oklahoma Territory around the time of the 1889 Land Run. To this day, OU’s famed RUF/NEKs not only drive the Sooner Schooner onto the field after every OU score, they also fire celebratory shots authenticated with wooden stocks.”

We understand that Oklahoma doesn’t want to get left behind appealing to recruits in the Uniforms Arms Race with the likes of Big 12 foes Oklahoma State, Baylor and Texas Tech, and the jerseys and pants are decent.

But making your helmets look like they were carved out of a tree stump is classic Nike absurdity. Grade: C-
