NW’s Pat Fitzgerald Blasts Vandy Football

Comments

Vanderbilt football backed out the final two games of a four-game deal with Northwestern, cancelling a 2013 date in Nashville and a 2014 date in Evanston. How did the Commodores inform the Wildcats of their decision? By snail mail.

That’s right, a letter. No phone calls. No emails. Not even a text message.

During a Friday morning interview on WSCR-AM’s “The Mully and Hanley Show,” Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald did not hide his frustration.

“We thought that we were peer institutions, and obviously we were mistaken,” he said. “I think it just shows where our program is heading in comparison to theirs.”

Fitzgerald might have a point there. Northwestern is 6–1 and spent the early part of this season in the Top 25. One of those wins was against Vandy, a 23-13 victory on Sept. 8. Vanderbilt, in a year where many expected the Commodores to take a step forward as a program, is a disappointing 2–4.

Ohio State announced that Vandy backed out of their game for 2013, which would have been the season opener. Let’s hope Urban Meyer is as candid as Fitzgerald about the snub.
