NCAA to Athletes in CO & WA: No Weed

Comments

On Tuesday, voters in Colorado and Washington approved the legalization of recreational marijuana use (while the state amendments passed, using marijuana is still in violation of federal law and the issue is far from being settled in those states).

Those amendments, however, does not apply to NCAA athletes at schools in those states, as marijuana use remains a violation of the organization’s substance abuse policies.

The NCAA released the following statement on Wednesday afternoon:

“The legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington does not impact the NCAA drug testing rules. The NCAA banned drug and testing policies are not tied to whether a substance is legal for general population use, but rather whether the substance is considered a threat to student-athlete health and safety or the integrity of the game.”

Both the NFL and NBA also emphasized earlier Wednesday that marijuana use is prohibited for all players regardless of state laws.

So for those aspiring college athletes hoping to base their school choice on the state’s drug laws, those plans just went up in smoke.
