K is Hopeful 1st Openly Gay NFL Player
If former Middle Tennessee State placekicker Alan Gendreau receives an invite to an NFL team’s OTAs this year and makes the final roster, he’ll make history as the first active, openly gay NFL player.
Gendreau — a member of the Blue Raiders from 2008–2011 — is not just attempting this on a wing and a prayer. A First Team All-Sun Belt performer for MTSU in 2009, he finished his collegiate career as the all-time leading scorer in conference history (295 points) prior to taking a year off from the game and living in Washington, D.C.
Gendreau was out of the closet to his college teammates and even penned a since-updated March 2009 piece for Outsports following his freshman season, detailing how his sexuality didn’t prevent him from fitting in with the team.
We’ll see over the next few months whether he can make history as well.
