Memphis’ Josh Pastner Yells at Louisville Fans
At 36 years old, Memphis’ Josh Pastner is younger than most of his head coaching counterparts in college basketball. Perhaps that explains his willingness to mix it up with Louisville fans after his Tigers upset the defending national champs, 73-67, on Thursday night.
After several Cardinals fans purportedly made verbal jabs questioning the character of the Tigers players, Pastner told them, “You grow up! We have a perfect APR score!” The interaction continued leading up to Pastner’s postgame radio show, which he did under the protection of half a dozen police officers.
“I think Louisville fans are tremendous. They’re like Memphis fans. They love their team,” Pastner said in his postgame press conference. “The only thing I ever get sensitive on is if anybody ever says our guys are low class or anything in that manner.”
To his credit, Pastner further explained that if you’re a fan, feel free to go after him. Just leave his players out of it.
“Say I’m the worst coach in the world,” he said. “Say I can’t coach zone. I’m the worst press coach. I look like I’m 13. I should be fired. I’m the worst this. I’m the worst that, but the thing that gets to me is if you say our kids (are bad) cause we’ve done a great job. That’s been a point of emphasis.”
If you’re one of Pastner’s players, how can you not appreciate that?
