Marshall Coach’s Flop Leads to Victory

Comments

We all know that flopping has become an epidemic in basketball but who knew a college basketball coach would resort to it?

That was the case on Saturday when Marshall coach Tom Herrion flopped after making contact with UCF guard Isaiah Sykes on the court in Huntington, W.Va., and collapsed to the floor repeatedly acting like he had taken a gun shot to the gut. The acting job landed Sykes a flagrant foul with 4:11 remaining in the first half. Referees spent 15 minutes looking at the call on replays before deciding to call a flagrant foul. Marshall’s Damier Pitts hit one of the two free throws and, as luck would have it, Marshall eventually won, 65-64.

It’s clear that contact was made between Sykes and Herrion but it looks like a flagrant foul call was ridiculous, especially since the referees even stated the contact was incidental. CBS Sports’ Jeff Goodman was at the game and said the act was so over-dramatic he thought Herrion was having a heart attack.

The Thundering Herd is now 13-4 and atop the Conference USA standings with a little help from Herrion’s acting chops.
