LSU’s Miles Cuts K Isom, Cites Tackling

Former LSU soccer player Mo Isom did not make the cut for the school’s football team as a kickoff specialist, according to the New Orleans Times Picayune on Wednesday.

However, the report said that coach Les Miles told her that she could come back in the fall and try out as a placekicker.

“We reviewed her skill, the things she can do and do well,” Miles said, according to the newspaper. “We kind of felt like there’s four guys on the team right now that would be ahead of anybody that tried out the other day, including Mo. I told her that.

“She’s going to go back and concentrate on extra points and field goals. She did not want to take that she couldn’t make the team. She said, ‘Do I get another opportunity if I get a lot better?’ I said ‘Sure.’ “

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Isom had garnered a bit of fame since she began working out with the team. She appeared on NBC’s “The Today Show” among other media appearances for her exploits. Isom told reporters after a recent workout that she hit two field goals from 50 yards.

But according to reports of the coach’s comments, Miles said that he felt uncomfortable with Isom’s tackling ability.

“She’s a great person but there’s some things she can’t do and she knows it,” Miles said. “We go to kicking off into the corner, we count on our kicker making some tackles and it’s just not something I’m comfortable she’s ready to do.

“It’s one of those spots you really can’t put a person that cannot tackle.”

Apparently, Miles was expecting a girl to be able to tackle the physical freaks known as SEC football players. Oh Les…
