RB Cannon Runs to Immortality vs. Ole Miss

LSU will never know another icon like Billy Cannon.

His legacy was already secure by his senior season in 1959, having led the Bayou Bengals to their first AP national championship the year before. But on Halloween night against third-ranked Ole Miss, he made the leap from superstar to legend.

With top-ranked LSU trailing 3–0, Canon fielded a Rebels punt inside his 20-yard line. He broke seven Ole Miss tackles en route to a zig-zagging, 89-yard touchdown that still stands as one of college football’s most famous plays.

Cannon would win that year’s Heisman Trophy before embarking on an 11-season pro career, 10 of which were spent in the upstart AFL. Since 1995, he has been a dentist at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, LA.

Fifty-three years after Cannon’s run, No. 7 LSU hosts Ole Miss again this Saturday night. Billy Cannon profile
