Jadeveon Clowney Delivers Hit of the Year

South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney may have delivered the Best Tackle of 2013 during the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day. That there are 364 days left on the calendar to potentially witness better ones feels like a moot point.

With the Gamecocks trailing Michigan, 22–21, in the fourth quarter, Clowney unloaded on Wolverines RB Vincent Smith, jarring the ball and Smith’s helmet loose. Clowney then casually recovered the ball with his left hand as if he were picking an apple.

While the hit itself was jarring, we’re almost more blown away by the fact that Michigan left one of college football’s most feared and physically gifted defensive lineman completely unblocked on a play.

Clowney’s hit was no doubt a sobering reminder to future South Carolina opponents, namely those in the SEC, that he has at least one more collegiate season before taking his act to the NFL. It also left members of the Twittersphere trembling.
