Illinois Students Voting on New Logo Ideas

Nearly six years after Illinois’ Chief Illiniwek logo and mascot were retired, current students have a chance to vote on designs for his replacement after the school collected submissions.

The top five vote-getters will be submitted to the university administration for further review. Some are legitimately good, while others ... not so much.

The Good

Like Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Eisenberg, we are digging the eagle symbol. Not only because it’s awesome but also because it doesn’t deviate too much from the old Illini logo (which would make diehard fans and alums very happy). We wouldn’t actually vote for Chef Illini; we just think it’s hilarious and clever.

The Bad

An ear of corn, a self-described “rabid squirrel” and what looks like a Greek muse mask. Yeah, we’ll pass.

The Ugly

Um ... it looks like Honest Abe is surrounded by 18 guns. Even though his assassination was nearly 150 years ago, this still makes us want to say, “Too soon.”
