Grambling: 8th Winless D1 Team Ever
Grambling State was determined not to make history on Wednesday night but in the end, the Tigers became the eighth Division I men’s basketball team ever to end a season winless after losing to Alabama A&M in the quarterfinals of the SWAC tournament, 59-51.
It was a valient effort by GSU (0-28), as the Tigers led at halftime, 28-25, after losing the previous two games to A&M by an average of 26 points. And in Grambling’s defense, this year’s roster consisted of eight scholarship players and seven walk-ons from the intramural program due to NCAA sanctions over low APR scores.
The other winless teams in D1 history are NJIT (2007-08), Savannah State (2004-05), Prairie View A&M (1991-92), The Citadel (1954-55), Baylor (1944-45), William & Mary (1936-37) and Dartmouth (1917-18).
On the plus side, the loss was the only time Grambling finished a game this season within single digits of an opponent.
Unfortunately, moral victories don’t count in the record books.
