Graham Breaks Up With Pitt Via Text

Comments

If you thought Bobby Petrino was a coward for informing Atlanta Falcon players he was taking the job at Arkansas by leaving behind Dear John letters in 2007, check out how Pitt football players learned Todd Graham was taking the head coaching job at Arizona State after just one year with the Panthers: Forwarded text message.

That’s right, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting this is what Graham sent to assistant athletic director/football operations Blair Philbrick, who then passed it onto the players:

“I have resigned my position at Pitt in the best interest of my family to pursue the head coaching position at Arizona State. Coaching there has always been a dream of ours and we have family there. The timing of the circumstances have prohibited from telling you this directly. I now am on my way to Tempe to continue those discussions. God Bless. Coach Graham.”

Ah yes, the old “dream job” excuse. If you’re going to leave a head coaching job, at least have the guts to tell your players face-to-face - especially when you are bolting after just one season.

And yes, this is the same Graham that said at his introductory press conference last January, “We’re going to treat (high school coaches’) players with great respect and they know they can trust and we’ll take care of them.”

Pitt players did not take the news well, especially linebacker Adam Lazenga and wide receiver Devin Street.

Tweeted Lazenga: “All I can say is wow.. Talk about committed hahah”, “Loling at the things Ive been told for the last year”, “Liar and a fraud… Lol.”

Tweeted Street: “http://pic.twitter.com/HMiKQ6gP The Liar got his Colors on already” (picture below).

We can’t blame Lazenga or Street for their anger.

How are college football players expected to learn to become men when coaches like Petrino and Graham can’t even look their players in the eye?
