Wake Planned Around Kansas S16 Game

In planning how to pay their last respects, the family of Lawrence, KS, resident Don Shoulberg — who recently passed away at age 76 — made sure that well-wishers wouldn’t have to awkwardly choose between Shoulberg’s wake and Kansas basketball’s game against No. 4 seed Michigan in the Sweet Sixteen on Friday night.

The last line of Shoulberg’s obituary in the Lawrence Journal-World reads as follows:

“A Prayer Service will be at 5 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013 at the mortuary followed by a visitation until tipoff time for the K.U. basketball game (approx. 6:30 p.m.).”

In the 1970s, he worked at KU in Student Health Services and taught in the School of Social Welfare before earning a Ph.D. in Speech Communication and Human Relations from the school in 1981.

So for those shocked and dismayed for this scheduling choice, take heart that Shoulberg likely would have wanted it this way.
