Hopeful Recruit Pulls Stunt, Nearly Dies
[Update: Barreto’s mom has told Local 6 news that he has 89 stitches in one leg and has not woken up since the crash. Our prayers are with him and his family.]
Trick shot videos have become all the rage for high school kids trying to impress college recruits. But the stunt a 19-year-old teenager from Palm Bay, FL, attempted to do on Wednesday to impress college football recruiters was just insane.
Apparently inspired by the old Kobe Bryant commercials that are clearly doctored where he jumps over a moving Aston Martin, Bladimir Barreto attempted to jump over over a moving Honda Accord driven by his brother after a running head start.
Instead of clearing the car, Barreto hit the front of the car, was tossed up into the air doing somersaults and landed on the road with a broken arm and leg along with several cuts.
“He’s lucky that it wasn’t worse than what it was,” Yvonne Martinez, spokeswoman for the Palm Bay Police Department, told Florida Today.
“The motive was apparently to video something to show to college recruiters for football.”
Barreto was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center’s trauma center in Melbourne, FL, and it appears he will be OK.
While we’re glad Barreto escaped with his life, we’re left wondering how someone could lack so much common sense to even attempt this.
Kids: For the love of everything that is holy, don’t try this at home.
