Fans Cheer for Malzahn at Auburn Airport
Gus Malzahn now knows how The Beatles felt at the height of their popularity in the 1960s. For he too has arrived at an airport to flashing cameras and an adoring throng of fans.
The 47-year-old Malzahn, who was the offensive brains behind Auburn’s 2010 BCS national title, agreed on Tuesday to return to The Plains as the Tigers’ new head coach. When his plane touched down at the local airport on Tuesday night, he received a hero’s welcome.
In his lone season as the head man at Arkansas State, Malzahn guided the Red Wolves to a 9–3 record and the Sun Belt Conference title.
Malzahn’s return to Auburn is notable for another reason: The feelings surrounding his arrival were the exact opposite of those surrounding the hiring of Gene Chizik in 2008. We will never forget Auburn AD Jay Jacobs being heckled at the airport with “We want a leader, not a loser!”
It looks like the Tiger faithful finally have one.
