Ex-WVU F Alexander with China’s Liaoning

There’s always a transition for American basketball players playing in China. For Joe Alexander, it likely took less time to settle in than most.

The former West Virginia star, who’s in his first season with Liaoning Jiebao Hunters (he has yet to play in a game), spent the first two years of his life in Taiwan and lived in China between the ages of eight and 14, becoming conversant in Mandarin.

Alexander hopes that this “homecoming” proves to be a productive one. A 2008 First Team All-Big East performer who led the Mountaineers to that year’s Sweet Sixteen, he hasn’t lived up to the billing that followed him into the NBA after the Milwaukee Bucks made him the eighth overall pick in the 2008 draft. Since then the 6-foot-8 forward has also seen time in the D-League and Russia.
